The Mummy Marathon- August 1st, 2020!

Saturday, August 1st, 2020

Some pictures from the Mummy Marathon!! Marathon #160 for me! Check out the crazy steep hills with ropes, especially the Stephanie Hill!! The race finishes with a river crossing too. 😉😉

Soooo... Marathon #160 complete, 26.2 miles!!! The Mummy Marathon is the hardest marathon east of the Mississippi River!!!! Wow!!!  🙂🙂

First, I would like to apologize to everyone who ran the Mummy Half Marathon or Marathon and encountered the Stephanie Hill. 😂 I am sorry! So funny!! Ha ha ha. The race director, Dan Droskii, named a hill after me. HA!! The Stephanie Hill.. Yeah, so that was intense. It is a sharp downhill that drops you straight down at like a 90° angle! You have to hang onto a rope and swing down/crawl. WOW!! 😮

This course is extremely challenging... There are 3 river crossings with about 3 feet deep of water in some parts. The current was strong, and the river was filled with seaweed.. Yikes! Then, there's endless rocks, roots, technical parts, tree climbing, obstacle courses, switchbacks, hills, roads, dirt roads, gravel, and trails.. You get a little bit of everything! Oh, and MUD. So. Much. Mud!!! Wow! The most challenging part of the race would be the endless extremely steep hills though. These hills are so steep that you need a rope to climb up and down them. (Think of climbing straight up a cliff or climbing a rock wall.) Some of the hills you have to crawl down too. It is INSANE!! We were sweaty, soaking wet from the river, muddy, and dirty by the end. It was great. Over 4,000 feet of elevation gain too.

Although this race is challenging, it is so much fun, and you get the best race swag too- a towel, jacket, two shirts, a medal, and railroad spike. I highly recommend this race- challenging, best race swag, and awesome race director. Thank you, Dan, for putting on such a great race, especially during the pandemic. You rock!!!

I feel so accomplished. It was a great day with friends too. Jeane and Heather ran the half marathon. Mark and I ran the full marathon. Shout out to Heather who was pregnant and totally rocked the half marathon!!! THAT is extremely impressive. We are so proud of you, Heather!!!

Several runners behind us also dropped out of the race, so Mark and I finished last. HA! Because of that, we got rewarded with HUGE last place trophies. Thank you to the runners behind us who dropped out because the last place trophy is amazing. 🙂  I also won my age group! Yeah!!!! Last place and an age group win! Hilarious! Ha! Two trophies! Ha ha!! Pretty awesome!! Being last place can be awesome sometimes too. Check out the HUGE trophy. 😂🤩

This was a fantastic day!! Very proud of this accomplishment!!! 🙂🙂
I did a crazy mileage challenge in July too, so I am very proud right now. I ran, walked, hiked, and biked 945 MILES in July for 30 days! 970 MILES, if you include day #31 and the 25 miles on the exercise/stationary bike. Wow!! I am feeling good. 😮😮

Believe in yourself. You can do anything!! ❤❤

July Mileage Challenge!!!

My own virtual race across Michigan!!!
30 Day Challenge!!
945 MILES in July!!!! Running, walking, hiking, and biking!!! 🙂
Ultra marathons #141 thru #159!
(18 unofficial ultras, 1 official marathon, 11 bike rides!)

My July Mileage Challenge! 945 miles!! 😮 So, I made up my own virtual race across Michigan for July. Cool!! 🙂 My favorite place ever is Whitefish Point, MI, so I figured I would make that the virtual goal. Well, from Grand Rapids to Whitefish Point is 315 miles. So, from Grand Rapids to Whitefish Point and back, and then back to Whitefish Point again is 945 miles!!! I did just that!!! 945 miles in July!! This averaged out to be 31.5 ish miles (50k) a day for 30 days!!! WHOA. 😮🤯🤩

YES!!! I ran, walked, hiked, and biked 945 MILES in 30 days in July!!! 😁😁

Note: Not part of the challenge. I added an additional 25 mile bike ride on July 31st at night, to make it 970 miles total for July!!!!

The What & How?! ⬇️⬇️
Sooooo.. How did I do it, you ask?! Well, I did it by running, walking, hiking, and biking. Almost half of it was on my exercise/stationary bike. (An exercise/stationary bike is easier than running. Ha!) I split the mileage up into 3-5 segments/times a day (early morning, morning, afternoon, night, late night), so it took me 8-11 hours total of running and walking. (3 hours or less if biking.) Breaking up the mileage into multiple times a day made it doable and easier for me. Also, I used two pairs of shoes, one pair of sandals, and I went barefoot.
Now, if I were to do this all at once, not take so many breaks, and no biking, it would be much more difficult!! HA!! 😶

I was super creative with the mileage too. 😜😜 Here's where/how I got the mileage- a motel room up north, motel parking lot up north, the beach on three Great Lakes, boardwalk, Castle Rock, Cut River Bridge, my friend's guest/spare bedroom, my friend's pool (I walked laps in the pool), Atlanta Airport perimeter twice & walking around three other airports, inside my house, my backyard, 10+ neighborhoods, two tracks, 20+ different trails, 15+ different parks, Cumberland Mountains, US Space & Rocket Center Museum, John Ball Zoo, my staircase, staircase on Division St, my treadmill, exercise/stationary bike, walking in place, and two official races!!

I ran, walked, and hiked in 5 states too- Michigan (lower and upper peninsula), Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, and North Carolina.

Yes, I went very slow with running and walking, no shame. (By going very slow and breaking up the mileage into a few times a day, that also made it doable.) Yes, I did sleep, more than you think. Yes, I know it's a crazy idea. Save the ridiculous comments, please. I already know I have weird ideas. Ha! 😜😜

So... This is the reason why there's been 19 ultras completed in July. Ultras #141 thru #159 completed. I only counted unofficial ultra marathons that I ran/walked during July, not bike. (18 unofficial ultras, 1 official marathon completed. 11 bike rides of 30+ miles.)

(Yes, I am well aware that these are unofficial ultras. I count the total for ME, NOT Marathon Maniacs. ME. My total. I love numbers and like to keep track of my marathons/ultras for me. It doesn't matter anyway. Do what works for YOU, no one else. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. If you want to count your unofficial marathons/ultras, you can. DO YOU. BE YOU.)

19 days in July- ➡️ 30+ miles of running, walking, and hiking. (19 ultra marathons #141 thru #159 completed, 18 unofficial ultras, 1 official marathon.)
11 days in July- ➡️ 30+ miles on my exercise/stationary bike.

My anxiety has been pretty bad during this pandemic, so I have been running a lot to help ease my mind and take my mind off things. Running has been a good stress relief. This pandemic also has inspired me to complete some wild and crazy running challenges/goals that I have always had.. Why not?? If you have the time, go for it!!! If you have a dream, go do it. I had extra time, so I have amped up my mileage! Yes, I went very slowly, but who cares! Forward is forward. Honestly, I've enjoyed it. I've enjoyed the extreme mileage and enjoyed achieving some wild running goals. It has been fun, in the weirdest way possible. Ha!! These running challenges have been amazing for Harry and I too. It's given us great adventures as a family, good memories, and great math lessons.

I hope you make a goal and achieve it too. I believe in you. I hope you believe in yourself too. ❤❤

Kensington Marathon- July 26th, 2020

Sunday, July 26th, 2020

Some pictures from the Kensington Marathon. Marathon #159 for me!

Another REAL/Official race!!!! My first official marathon since February!! Wow! Marathon #159 complete, 26.2 miles!! 😁😁 The Kensington Marathon is always such a great race! 🙂🙂
(Marathon #159 due to my crazy mileage challenge in July. See below. 😜😜)

Exactly 5 years ago on July 26th, 2015, I ran my FIRST HALF marathon at Kensington, after an 8 year hiatus of running and racing!!! I was so excited to run that half marathon in 2015, and I was hooked after it. Now, 5 years later, I have completed 159 marathons and ultra marathons. Yikes. (Yes, some are unofficial, but I count the total for me just because I like to keep track.) So today, I wore the same outfit I wore 5 years ago! HA HA! 😂 Note: I do look the same in 2015.. Well, my hair has changed.

The Kensington Marathon is such a great race too. The park is beautiful, and the course is great with rolling hills. Love this place!! However, it was very hot and humid, and there's very little shade. 90% humidity at the start. By 10am, the heat index was 100°F and remained that throughout the day!! Wow!!! HOT!!! 🥵🥵 The temperature got up to 92°F, and the dew point was 72°F, so very hot and humid. Regardless of the temperature, it was an enjoyable day. Lots of birds to see! Only bad thing, a goose followed me at mile 12!! Yikes!!! Geese are strange birds. 😮😮

I did run very slowly for this marathon because it was very hot, but I don't care. It is ok!! Forward is forward. When it is very hot, I tend to fall apart, so I took it very easy and just enjoyed the beautiful scenery and got followed by a goose in the process. Ha ha! Nothing wrong with running slowly, especially when there's a heat index of 100°F!! Actually there's nothing wrong with running slowly in general. Forward is forward. You are fantastic!

Shout out to the race director, Rick!!! He did a fantastic job with safely putting on a great road race during a pandemic!!! The start line was spaced out, and you were assigned a number to stand on at the start. We started in zones, just like how you are called to board an airplane at an airport! You wore a mask at the start line and at the aid stations too. I am extremely thankful that this race happened,  and I am very glad I ran it. Thank you to my runner friend Scott Struck for the last minute the race entry too.. Much appreciated! 🙂🙂🙂

July Mileage Challenge! ⬇️⬇️
Back story... So, I started a July challenge. 30+ miles a day... Well, today was just a marathon but still...

I have been doing this by running, walking, hiking, and biking.. I split the mileage up into 3-5 segments/times a day. (early morning, morning, afternoon, night, late night) So, it takes me 8-11 hours total of running and walking to get the 30+ miles. (3 hours or less if biking.)
Yes, I am going very slowly with running, no shame. Yes, I sleep, more than you think. Yes, I know it's a crazy idea. Save the comments. Ha! 😜😜

So... This is the reason why there's been 19 ultras completed in July... Only counting unofficial ultra marathons that I run/walk, not bike.

19 days in July- ➡️ 30+ miles of running, walking, and hiking (19 ultra marathons #141 thru #159 completed, 18 unofficial, 1 official.)
11 days in July- ➡️  30+ miles on my exercise/stationary bike

And YES. I am well-aware that these ultra marathons are unofficial. I count the total for ME, NOT Marathon Maniacs, ME. My total. I covered the distance, therefore I include them in my total. I like numbers and keeping track of things too, therefore I keep track of my total, unofficial and official. It is ok.. Do what works for you, no one else.

Kensington Marathon Back Story/History: ⬇️⬇️
The Kensington Marathon will always have a special place in my heart. 5 years ago on July 26th, 2015, was where it all began... I had just started running again after an 8 year hiatus. Running was my life when I was younger, and I was glad to be back.. I signed up for my first half marathon a few months before I did it. I was scared. It was my first race in almost a decade too, but I went out there and ran my first HALF MARATHON. 13.1 miles, only. HA HA!! I loved it, but I wanted more. I wanted a full marathon. Fast forward to October 2015, I ran my first marathon at the Detroit Free Press Marathon. I was hooked. Ha. By 1 year later at Kensington in 2016, I was already on marathon #10.. And then I went overboard. HA. I am a bit of an overachiever, or I like to run A LOT. 😉

As a kid, I ran fun races, and I ran cross country and track. Loved it! I was a fast run back then. Ha! I always had dreams of becoming a marathon runner or an ultra runner because I read about in a Runners World Magazine when I was a teenager. I always wondered what it would be like to run 100 miles. I figured that out many times though. Ha! I jokingly said I would run a 100 miler and run the Boston Marathon when I was like 14 years old. Little did I know that I would run a 100 miler, 18 of them actually!!! (Some unofficial 100 milers, but again I count the total for me.) I still have not qualified for the Boston Marathon, maybe one day when I am like 80. HA HA. 😂

Well, someone once told me that I couldn't run marathons because of my funky feet and many other reasons. (I walk like a duck because my feet stick out. They are crooked. I can't help it, I was born this way.) To run a marathon was my dream as a kid, but it was crushed. I believed this person for so long. I didn't believe in myself. Truthfully, I have been bullied a few times. We all have at some point. Then a series of very traumatic events happened and kept happening, including my dad's suicide in September 2006, and I stopped running for 8 years. My dad's suicide hit me hard.. I fell apart. Miss you, dad. Truthfully, his suicide still hurts. 💔 My spark was gone. Running was my passion too. I went thru many trials, tribulations, obstacles, and hardships along the way. Some bad situations, bad jobs/bad work environments, some scary stuff, bullying, and just bad luck in general. I survived. I am a survivor of many, many things. I have left some toxic situations too, and I am proud of that strength to leave.. Whoa.. I am proud.. I am seriously going to write a book.. You would be amazed at what you can survive. Seriously, you can survive a lot. We have all been through some crazy things in the past. It helps shape us.. You deserve the best too. One thing I learned is "keep moving forward." Fall 10 times, stand up 11 times. Seriously, keep going, keep trying, keep moving forward. There's nothing you can't handle. No storm is too big. You'll eventually get where you need to be, just keep moving forward.

Then, shortly after my son turned 2 years old, I expressed interest in taking up my old hobby again. (Harry's birth alone was traumatic. Ha! 6 days of labor and an emergency c-section later. Thankful we were both ok. No wonder I waited until he was 2 years old to try running again. Ha ha.) Scott that I wanted to run a marathon. His response, "Just go for it." Ok! 🤷‍♀️🤔 It all started with trying to get our dog to lose weight. I didn't even have running shoes anymore but didn't care. I wore all the "wrong" clothes but didn't care. I hadn't ran in years (besides a mile here and there or going for walks), but I went out and ran 9 miles on zero training that day in February 2015. That hurt the next day.. For real. Ha ha! Then, it became a regular thing, and I bought running shoes again. I took my dog for runs, and the spark I had came back. I worked hard and realized I CAN make my dream come true. I started running marathons in October 2015, and well you know the rest... Believing in yourself is key.. ❤❤

NEVER believe someone who tells you that you can't. YOU CAN!!! Believe in yourself and you are half way there. I once thought I couldn't run a marathon, but here I am. 159 marathons and ultras later.. I love marathons and ultras so much, I do them on my own now without races. I just love it... YOU CAN DO IT. Anything is possible. Your dreams are possible. The sky is the limit! YOU CAN DO ANYTHING. Also, never believe the doubters and the haters. Never believe the people who start rumors. Get rid of the negativity and hatred. You got this. You can do anything!! Trust me, you can do anything.

Running does so much for me, and so many adventures have happened in our lives because of it. I'm thankful for the relief I get from my anxieties when I run too.. Running is my sport, but it is also my therapy. Thankful. It's amazing.

As you've probably guessed too, I think "outside the box" when it comes to just about anything. I am super creative with everything too, and I love projects. I've always been a bit quirky, weird, and creative. It is fun!! So, this brings me to the pandemic. All of my races were cancelled from March thru June. Some in July, August, and September were cancelled too! Wow! To stay trained and motivated, I decided to use my creativity to create my own races at home with the help of my son. It turned into math lessons, running, and more! This was awesome. Running + creativity + your own unique races = total awesomeness!

This brings me to the Stay at Home Order of the pandemic. I created crazy running challenges and adventures too. I did this for 12 weeks. It helped with my anxiety over the situation, gave my family and I more adventures, and it brought me joy. I shared my story all over the world. I am featured in the the local Fox17 news twice, Aravaipa Strong Virtual Race YouTube show, Running 4 Soles Podcast, Canadian Running Magazine, Insider news, and Run Society Magazine in Asia!!!! I am forever grateful for that opportunity. I love being known worldwide. I love sharing my story. I truly believe that you CAN do anything, and I hoped to show people this. You are possible. Your goals are possible. You are good enough. ❤❤

The Inclinator Race- July 11th, 2020!

Saturday, July 11th, 2020

My first real/official race since February 29th! It was so much fun!! I missed races. 😢 I completed the Inclinator Race, which 50 flights of this giant staircase! With running to and from the race/Lookout Park and the 50 flights of this giant staircase, it was about 5,000 feet of elevation gain. Yeah!! 😁😁

I also completed an unofficial ultra marathon (#151) along with the Inclinator, because why not?! Ha! I ran at home, ran to Lookout Park, completed the Inclinator Race, ran home, and then ran at home-- Unofficial ultra marathon #151 complete!! 30 miles!!! 🙂🙂

July Mileage Challenge: ➡️➡️ Back story... So, I started a July Mileage Challenge. 30+ miles a day... See that blog post!!

Anyways, the Inclinator Race was amazing. The race director is wonderful. He did a fantastic job with safely putting on a small race. Safe and clean! My friend Sarah celebrated her birthday there too, which was great. Also, several runners at the race recognized me from the news, so I was quite the celebrity. It was hilarious. Ha! Several runners were excited to see the "runner from TV" today. They were inspired by me, which is what I hope to do. 🤩🤩 I must say though this was hard. I climbed the height of Mt. Everest on my staircase at home. I climbed double the height of Mt. Everest on my staircase and step stool at home. But, this giant staircase is evil and a bit more challenging. It has an extremely steep grade/incline. Ha ha. 😂🤦‍♀️

Stay at Home Order Running Challenges

EPIC adventures in the spring during the Stay at Home Order in Michigan!!! I gave myself a running challenge for each week of the Stay at Home Order.
❤❤❤

Here's 12 weeks of EPIC running challenges and adventures!!

March 15th through June 5th... 1,631 miles in 12 weeks!
(Technically, June 7th is when I stopped counting the mileage, since Michigan opened back up on June 8th.)

All of my races were cancelled thru June, so I decided to create my own races and challenges with the help of my son... Harry also designed medals and belt buckles, and Kim created them for us!! :) I did participate in a few virtual races, and I won Most Creative Indoor Race too.
(Yes, I am well aware that they are not official races. I count my total for me, and I LOVE to run.)

During these 12 weeks of running challenges, I was very fortunate and got to share my running journey many times.. I was on the local Fox17 News twice. Then, I received the Most Creative Indoor Race award on a YouTube show for the Aravaipa Strong Virtual Race, and I got to "hang out" with some famous runners. I also had a podcast with Running 4 Soles... Finally, I was featured in the Canadian Running Magazine and Insider News!!!!!! WOW!! I am extremely proud. I hope to lead by example and show people that they are capable of anything. I hope to inspire people to do something great, whatever that may be..

Sasquatch Virtual 100 Mile Run!

Sasquatch Virtual 100 Mile Run!!!
June 3-5, 2020

Well... That's a wrap, for now!! 12 weeks of EPIC running challenges complete... Final challenge... I completed my friend's (Kim Levinsky) Sasquatch Virtual 100 Mile Race for my final running challenge of the Stay at Home Order in Michigan! I took 3 days to complete it and took my time, finished Friday.. (33.5 miles each day) It was another backyard and at home run!! That concludes the 12 weeks of EPIC running challenges during the pandemic closure/shutdowns and Stay at Home Order.. WOW!!! I gave myself a running challenge for each week of the Stay at Home Order, and I did it. AWESOME! Yes, literally, 12 weeks of EPIC running challenges! 🙂

Sooooo... It has been 12 weeks of EPIC running challenges, while working/teaching preschool from home/online AND homeschooling Harry simultaneously... I pushed myself to the limit, and I learned that I am truly limitless. It was awesome. So, I have always been very unique and creative. I always think "outside the box" too. I like to be different or a little weird, I guess. Ha! 🤷‍♀️ I'm not fast or elite or professional, but I never give up. I have intense determination. I go out there and make it happen. I love what I do. Anyways, I hope that my crazy running challenges during the "Stay at Home Order" have inspired others... I want people to know that they can overcome and achieve anything. YOU CAN DO ANYTHING. YOU are possible. Your goals are possible. Repeat, you can do anything. ❤

I hope to inspire people to do something great, whatever that may be.

Finally... Here's the math, calculations, measurements, etc... ⬇️⬇️

Wednesday- 8 miles inside the living room, 26 miles in the backyard
Thursday- 8 miles in the living room, 26 miles in the backyard
Friday- 8 miles in the living room, 26 miles in the backyard

Lap measurements: ⬇️⬇️

Inside Living Room Laps: ⬇️⬇️
I measured the distance around my living room with a tape measure. It is about 16 feet long and 9 feet wide. That is 50 feet is perimeter, which means 106 laps per miles!! 😜😜

(Math problems-
Perimeter, 16+16+9+9= 50 feet. 5,280 feet in a mile. 5,280÷50= 105.6, round up to make sure, 106! 106 laps for a mile!! 😜😜)

Wednesday- 8 miles, 848 laps
Thursday- 8 miles, 848 laps
Friday- 8 miles, 848 laps

Backyard Laps: ⬇️⬇️
It is 0.032 miles and 172 feet in perimeter around my driveway. I measured the driveway out with a tape measure and watch. 75 feet long and 11 feet wide, 172 feet in perimeter.. That's 31 laps for a mile.

(Math problems-
Perimeter- 75+75+11+11= 172 feet. 5,280 feet in a mile. 5,280÷172= 30.7. Round up to make sure, 31 laps per mile. 😜)

Wednesday- 26 miles, 806 laps
Thursday- 26 miles, 806 laps
Friday- 26 miles, 806 laps

Calculations: ⬇️⬇️
Same format as my previous backyard and indoor 100s...
I used my watch for tracking mileage and step count. Harry and I also kept track with tally marks on paper. We counted the laps, and then we put a tally mark down for each mile.

Example-- In the backyard, 1 for 1 lap, 2 for 2 laps, etc... It's 31 laps for a mile in the backyard, so when we counted up to 31, we would make a tally.
